Battle Brief

The first confirmed engagement of the 500 Worlds campaign began inside a Necron tomb complex on Vandrek IV. What began as a reconnaissance action became a race for the tomb world’s communications network as Necron defenders moved to secure key communications nodes.

Captain Demetrian Titus led a 500-point Ultramarines boarding force into the complex. The Necrons, fielding approximately 450 points, attempted to hold the network long enough to deny the invaders valuable intelligence and destroy the attacking force.

The Ultramarines were not there simply to destroy the tomb. They needed its information.

The Battle

Round 1

Round 1 — Breach

The Ultramarines seized the initiative. Titus drove the boarding party into the first chambers before the Necrons could establish a stable defensive line. Concentrated bolter fire destroyed several Necron units and forced the defenders back toward the communications nodes. The Necrons answered with return fire and began converging on the attackers. Multiple Necron units were destroyed during the opening exchange, while the Ultramarines suffered their first casualties.

Round 2

Round 2 — The Counterattack

The Necrons struck back hard. Fighting spread across several chambers as the defenders attempted to isolate individual Ultramarines units and retake the communications nodes. A substantial portion of the Space Marine force was destroyed during the fighting. Titus remained committed to the objectives, directing his surviving Marines deeper into the complex while the Necrons continued to absorb punishment and return to the fight.

Round 3

Round 3 — The Code

Titus changed tactics. Rather than attempting to destroy every Necron in the complex, the Ultramarines concentrated on the objectives. The first three digits of the encryption were revealed as the boarding party secured the communications nodes: 3, 1, and 4. The final digit remained concealed.

Round 4

Round 4 — The Tomb Closes

The remaining Necron forces launched another counterattack. The Ultramarines were badly depleted, but Titus personally led the assault on the final communications node. The Necron defenders were driven back and the fourth digit was revealed: 2. The complete code was 3142.

Round 5

Round 5 — Extraction

The Necrons made one final attempt to reclaim the complex. The surviving Ultramarines held the communications network long enough to complete their extraction, despite further casualties. The Necrons retained enough strength to prevent the total destruction of the tomb complex, but the communications network had been compromised.

The Result

Victory

Score: 90 VP — Crack the Code

Ultramarines Victory. The Ultramarines correctly guessed the complete code, scoring 90 VP for Crack the Code.

How the battle ended:
Titus and the surviving Ultramarines held the final communications node long enough to complete the extraction after correctly identifying the code as 3142.

Aftermath

The Ultramarines recovered their first meaningful intelligence concerning the Necron presence on Vandrek IV. Necron communications were compromised, and Vandrek IV became an active point of interest in the 500 Worlds campaign. Demetrian Titus remains ALIVE.
